Primary vs. Secondary Sources
For this assignment, you will need to find secondary sources.

  • Primary source: An original source of information, such as an eyewitness account of an event, data obtained through original research, or an original creative work. Examples include: diaries, letters, public records, manuscripts, newspaper clippings, transcripts of interviews and photographs.
  • Secondary source: A source that describes, explains, analyzes, and interprets an event, from primary sources. Examples include: biographies, commentaries, criticisms, dissertations, journal articles, monographs, and textbooks.

Academic vs. Popular Articles
For this assignment, you will need to find academic articles. Use our chart to tell the difference between an academic (scholarly) journal and a popular magazine. If in doubt, ask your professor.

  • Academic journal: A periodical containing articles written by scholars for an academic audience.
  • Popular magazine: A periodical containing articles written by staff writers for the general public.
